… It Goes Like This

… I’ll be sharing a meal with friends where we each bring a dish. I’ve decided to make a chickpea curry with coconut milk, capsicum, spinach and many herbs and spices.

In 2022 I lived within a beautiful community of 2000 on a tiny island. Meals from scratch are made from what is in season rather than being able to access a supermarket with every variety of seasonal produce.

My veggie patch does not have capscicum or spinach. I see on social media a post from someone asking for capscicum. I happen to see the post. I reach out and am told to just call in and help myself from their garden.

Fortunately, where I’m living there is an abundance of avocados falling to the ground every day. Presto. A perfect trade. Plus the coriander is so lush I pick some to dress the chickpea curry.

With friends I trade avocados for chocos and herbs, sweet potatoes and grapefruit. Home made banana cake and sourdough bread. All grown and cooked on the island. It is a beautiful thing to trade, barter, swap and gift from ones own garden.

I save paper for my friends fireplace. This last year I’ve gifted and shared blood plums, peaches, tomatoes, oranges and pears.
